All about Whipple, Arizona

Whipple, Arizona is best known as Fort Whipple, famous for serving as a tactical base for the United States Army during the Indian Wars of 1864 to 1886. But even decades before then, Fort Whipple and its company of infantrymen protected the Territorial Capital of Prescott, the goldfields, and the early settlers of the frontier.

The fort, named after Lt. Amiel W. Whipple, led a military expedition in 1853-54 and established the first access routes to the nearby goldfields.

The military considered closing the fort until the start of the Spanish-American War in 1898. The fort became one of the main headquarters for one-fifth of the entire U.S. Army. Whipple became an origin point for the infamous Rough Riders, the First US Volunteer Cavalry, winning great fame and glory under Teddy Roosevelt.

After World War I, the War Department expanded the site. Fort Whipple became a U.S. Army Hospital to treat soldier’s lung problems ranging from chemical weapons injuries to tuberculosis and other respiratory ailments. By the mid-1920s, Fort Whipple was the fourth largest disabled Veteran’s Hospital in the United States and continues today serving veterans as a V.A. medical facility.
