All about Park City, Utah
A group of prospecting soldiers stationed near Salt Lake City in 1868 struck silver in the surrounding hills of what was formally called Parley’s Park City. Subsequently, many other significant strikes followed. Word quickly spread, and adventurous prospectors flooded to the area, setting up remote camps around the mountain and turning it into a silver mining boomtown.
The new population put down their roots and quickly constructed mining shacks, schools, churches, and prospering businesses. In 1884, ‘Parley’ was dropped from the name, and Park City was finally incorporated as a town.
The town’s residents enjoyed great prosperity and established many fortunes for half a century, with more than $400 million in silver discovered. Park City attracted international fortune hunters, and by 1889, the town’s population was over 5,000. By mid-century, the city nearly became a ghost town attributing to declining silver and metal prices following two World Wars and Great Depression.
In 1963, Park City qualified for a loan from the Federal Area Redevelopment Agency to open Park City Mountain Resort, The Canyons, and Park City Mountain. Deer Valley Resort opened in 1982, incorporating many of the former ski runs.
