All about El Mirage, Arizona

The Hohokam, a Native American community, was the earliest inhabitants of El Mirage and still plays a role in the town’s culture today. The Hohokam are skilled irrigation farmers and found ingenious ways to bring water to their crops in the dry Arizona landscape.

El Mirage is 20 miles west of Phoenix near the infamous Grand Avenue and located on the banks of the Agua Fria River. In the early 1930s, migrant farmworkers found it ideal to settle and began constructing their homes and farms.

Not long after, the Army Air Field nearby (Luke Air Force Base) set up an auxiliary training field for pilots in World War II. Today the community still maintains a close relationship with the Air Force Base.

El Mirage was officially incorporated in 1951.
