All About Surprise, Arizona
Surprise is an Arizona city that has seen a massive population boom in recent decades, nearly quadrupling just between 2000 and 2010, and growing to an estimated 142,000 people by 2020. The city was first founded by Flora Mae Statler in 1938. She named it Surprise because she “would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much,” so she might be impressed by the amount of recent growth it has seen.
In those early days, Surprise consisted of a few houses and a gas station on the one-square-mile parcel of land owned by Statler. It was incorporated as a city in 1960. It has become a prime destination for retirees since the ‘90s, since it is next to the Sun City West 55+ community. A quarter of Surprise’s population is over the age of 65.
The 55+ community next door consists of the perfect mix of services and activities. There are four recreation centers, nine golf courses, and many restaurants. There are outdoor and indoor swimming pools, fitness centers, walking tracks, ballrooms, dance workshops, hobby and craft areas, and a library. Seniors enjoy tennis, bocce, pickleball, shuffleboard, softball, yard bowling, volleyball, and basketball. You can find countless entertainment opportunities and everything you want in your ideal community in the unparalleled Sun City West, Arizona.
