All about Albuquerque, New Mexico

The first explorers arrived in Albuquerque from Spain in 1540, but it wasn’t until 1706 that a group of colonists was granted permission by King Philip to develop a new city on the banks of the Rio Grande. After finding the perfect site with water, wood, and security from the Native Americans in the area, a letter was penned to the Duke of Alburquerque in Spain to report the newly established city and named it “La Villa de Alburquerque” in honor of the duke.
